Silk Degumming

In order to make a silk fabric soft and glossy it is necessary to remove the sericin or gum by a treatment is called degumming. It is basically a recovering operation; the silk is treated with soap at a temperature of 105ÂșC.
As much as one third of the weight of the fabric may be lost when the gum is removed.
Raw silk with the gum is called hard silk and degumming silk is called soft silk.
